Eventually, the church wanted a shorter statement of faith--a summary of belief--so people could confess their belief before being baptized. The Apostles' Creed was written for just that reason. During the first three hundred years of the church, new believers would spend three years in a special class, learning what Jesus taught and how we should live for Jesus. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from where He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of the saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the dead, and the life everlasting. Amen.
