Through the endless cycle of rain and snow, spring, summer, fall and winter, Patrick began to pray. Our nobleman, who loved only himself, began to love Jesus more and more. In fact, the more he prayed, the more he wanted to pray, until Patrick said one hundred prayers a day. Near the end of the Roman Empire, fifteen-year-old Patrick was born into the life of a nobleman. Yet, he had no interest in the Christian faith of his family or in living a life of service like his father and grandfather. Instead, Patrick was interested in Patrick.
That changed one frightening day when Irish slave traders kidnapped Patrick, taking him into slavery. The pirates meant their action for evil, but God meant it for good. On a hillside in Ireland, Patrick became a servant of the living God.
Patrick later became a missionary to the pagan land of Ireland, where many were saved. Because they also came to serve Jesus, the Irish stopped practicing human sacrifice, committing acts of piracy, and enslaving people. In fact, many missionaries were sent from Ireland into the world, where they shared the good news of Jesus Christ.
God used one rebellious young boy to bring people to himself, to change a nation, and then to spread the gospel throughout the medieval world.
Who Was Saint Patrick? (And what does it mean to be a saint?)
While the Roman Catholic Church defines saints as a special class of Christian, with specific requirements for who qualifies, our God uses the word "saint" throughout Scripture. For instance, in 1 Corinthians 1:2, ESV, Paul wrote:To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours.
Who are saints? Those who are sanctified (and therefore justified) in Jesus. All true believers who call on the name of Christ are a part of Jesus' kingdom--his believers from all times, nations, and people.
The title Saint Patrick is a result of the Roman Catholic Church's canonization of Patrick as a saint. Protestants call him "Patrick of Ireland," labeling the missionary with his chosen homeland. He is a part of God's kingdom, a brother in Christ.
