Christian History Matters for Our Kids.
History matters. Now, more than ever, we see how important it is for our children to know and understand history and the Bible.
Here's why:
- God is the sovereign ruler of all things. It's important for our kids to see his hand in the history of nations and in the lives of both peasants and kings.
- Christian history is the story of our family history. Our kids get to see how people who love Jesus follow him.
- Understanding history can help our kids learn historic and biblical theology. They learn what the Bible says and what that means for us. They also see when the study of Scripture has taken important turns that have changed the Church.
- Reading Christian biographies and history can be a wonderful way for kids to think outside their own time and culture. God's Church spans centuries and includes people from every nation.
- Christian biographies help kids consider their own faith, walk with Jesus, and the impact their witness may one day have on others--and on history.
Elementary-aged kids need middle grade resources that are fun, a little sassy, and that teach valuable lessons.
The Who What Why Series is the perfect resource to teach your kids about history, while helping them apply biblical truths to their lives today.
The New Testament

The New Testament in the Bible covers important history, from the Incarnation of Jesus through the letters of the apostles.
Jesus, who is God the Son, became fully God and fully human, taught us how to live for his glory, then took the punishment of all believers on himself on the Cross. He died, was buried, and rose from the dead, then ascended to heaven. One day, believers will also be resurrected to live forever with Jesus on the new earth.

Who Were the Disciples?
Ever wondered what it was like to walk alongside Jesus? Dive into this exciting exploration of the twelve disciples - regular guys who became part of the greatest story ever told! With fun black-and-white illustrations throughout, you'll discover how fishermen, tax collectors, and even a former terrorist became Jesus' closest friends and changed history forever.
Follow Peter as he walks on water (and sometimes sinks!), watch Matthew throw a huge party after leaving his tax booth behind, and see how Thomas went from doubting to believing. You'll learn how John went from being called a "Son of Thunder" to becoming known as the apostle of love, and find out why Jesus chose Judas even though He knew what would happen.
Each chapter brings these fascinating characters to life, showing how Jesus transformed ordinary people into extraordinary followers. You'll see their mistakes, their victories, and their incredible courage as they spread the good news across the world - even when it meant facing danger.
Throughout history, God has often chosen the most ho-hum, ordinary lives with which to do the most extraordinary things. God’s marvelous work in history, you see, does not depend upon the amazingness of the people he chooses to work through. Rather, God’s astonishing work in history is all about how incredible he is.

What Was the Cross?
Discover the amazing story of the Cross in this special book from the Who, What, Why? series! With fun black-and-white illustrations and easy-to-understand explanations, young readers will explore one of the most important events in the Bible.
Why did Jesus die on the Cross? What does it mean for us today? Author Danika Cooley takes kids on an exciting journey through time, starting in the Garden of Eden and following God's incredible rescue plan all the way to Jesus. Along the way, readers will meet fascinating characters like Isaiah who told people about Jesus hundreds of years before He was born, John the Baptist who called Jesus "the Lamb of God," and the disciples who followed Jesus everywhere.
The Cross is the most important event in all of human history because it is the moment when Jesus, who is God the Son and the Son of God, paid for the sins of all who believe in him. Sin makes us enemies of God. Not only did Jesus bring about the forgiveness of sin for all believers, but at the Cross Jesus also made his followers friends of God instead of his enemies.

Why Did the Resurrection Happen?
This exciting book explores one of the most important events in history - when Jesus rose from the dead three days after dying on the cross. Written especially for kids ages 8-12, it explains why the resurrection happened and what it means for us today.
You'll learn about the Feast of Firstfruits in the Old Testament and how it pointed to Jesus' resurrection. Follow along as women discover the empty tomb, disciples race to see for themselves, and over 500 people witness the risen Jesus! The book explains how Jesus appeared to his followers for 40 days, even eating meals with them, before ascending to heaven.
But this isn't just history - the book shows why Jesus' resurrection matters for you. It explains how Jesus conquered death so that everyone who believes in him can have eternal life. You'll discover what the "already-and-not-yet kingdom" means and learn about the amazing new Jerusalem that awaits believers.
Jesus’ resurrection guarantees that, just like Jesus, in eternity we will never get sick, or old, or die. In fact, we will live forever with Jesus on the new earth, where there will be no sin and no death.

The Who What Why Series is the perfect resource to teach your kids about history, while helping them apply biblical truths to their lives today.

This series is one of my favorite discipleship resources for kids. Each book is packed with solid theology and biblical truth, but written in a way that’s engaging, conversational, and totally accessible for kids and their parents. These books are perfect for read-aloud time, family devotions, or just having meaningful conversations about all those "why" questions kids have about Jesus and the Bible! Thankful to have it on our bookshelf. (In case you're wondering, it would be a great set to read leading up to Easter, but it is perfectly suitable to read any time of year. We're reading it together in the middle of July!)
This series walks your kids through the most important moments in history. Here's our families take aways:
Who Were the Disciples: Each chapter covers a different disciple and if there isn't much known about that disciple then the author explains more of what life would have been like and things we know the disciples experienced. There is a key focus on the difference Jesus made in each one's life.
What Was the Cross: More than just a symbol the cross was part of God's rescue plan from the beginning. Connect the dots from the old testament to see how the Messiahs crucifixion was prophesied and the importance of nailing our sins to the cross
Why Did the Resurrection Happen: He was there in the beginning and will be forever! Take a look at festivals/holidays that pointed to the resurrection. Discuss the difference between disciple and apostle. Look forward to what is yet to come. Understanding the resurrection is the foundation of knowing the gospel message.
These books will help equip your family! They address hard questions in an easy to understand way. The sections are short so you can pick it up and read for just a few minutes or keep going if you can't set it down.
Your kids won't be the only ones learning.
Danika Cooley has done it again with Who What Why: The Resurrection. This short and impactful book is a gospel-rich, biblically grounded guide to help our children understand not just that Jesus rose from the dead, but why that truth changes everything.
As a homeschooling mom who wants every subject and every conversation to point back to Christ, this little book fits right into our rhythm of family discipleship. It’s simple enough for young readers to grasp (I’d say perfect for ages 7–12), but it doesn’t water down the truth. Danika walks through essential questions: Who died and rose again? What happened on the cross and in the tomb? Why does it matter?
Each chapter is Scripture-saturated, yet completely accessible. It invites conversation, deeper thought, and worship. We read it aloud over breakfast, and it sparked such thoughtful questions from my kids. I love that it keeps our eyes on Jesus, not moralism, not fluff, but real Gospel truth.
If you’re raising your children with a high view of Scripture and a heart for sound doctrine, this is one to add to your family library. It would also make a wonderful Easter devotional or a companion to your Bible time year-round. Honestly, I’m praying every family gets their hands on this one.
Danika Cooley has done great with these three new books in her Who, What, Why series.
Once again, she has addressed difficult questions and has answered them in her easy-to-understand, conversational tone.
These simple chapter books help kids learn about the twelve disciples, the Cross, and Jesus' resurrection. Danika explains the gospel message clearly and kids are sure to be impacted.
The accompanying free lapbook activities are a perfect pairing and I highly recommend that kids review the books' information with these hands-on projects.
I would highly recommend these books for homeschooling middle school age Bible class as well as for Sunday school or children church classes.
My kids love all of the books from the Who What Why series - as do I! Danika makes it so easy to learn about history and the Bible.
Who Were the Disciples?
A great book for all ages!
This book shows you what it was like to be one of Jesus' disciples. It is packed with information about each disciple, with a chapter dedicated to each one. Danika has a great way of explaining and talking about the disciples that just makes sense.
Why Did the Resurrection Happen?
A great book that everyone should read!
This book teaches readers about Christ's resurrection and is written with ages 7-12 in mind. Danika teaches about the resurrection and why it matters to you - something I especially love.
What Was the Cross?
A great way to learn about history and the Bible.
This book is all about the cross and talks about why Jesus died on it, what it means for us, and how it is the story of the greatest event in history.
If you have kids, I highly recommend these books! The font is easy to read, there are fantastic illustrations, and it is organized well. Bible verses and a timeline are included as well.
We have loved the Who What Why series and this new set is sure to be a hit with our kids. Can't wait to dive into them!
Danika manages to be both theologically deep but also engaging and child-friendly! Her narrative style makes these meaty books easy to understand. As a pastor's wife and homeschool mom, I appreciate that she doesn't water down these topics for children. Kids really can handle big theology! Kids are naturally curious and Danika answers those questions not with isolated narratives, but with a whole-Scripture approach. I love these books!
