Who What Why Series | The New Testament
The New Testament in the Bible covers important history, from the Incarnation of Jesus through the letters of the apostles.
Jesus, who is God the Son, became fully God and fully human, taught us how to live for his glory, then took the punishment of all believers on himself on the Cross. He died, was buried, and rose from the dead, then ascended to heaven. One day, believers will also be resurrected to live forever with Jesus on the new earth.
Teach your kids about the New Testament with fun narrative and important biblical truth through the Who What Why series from Danika Cooley and Christian Focus Publications.
What Was the Cross?
The Cross is the most important event in all of human history because it is the moment when Jesus, who is God the Son and the Son of God, paid for the sins of all who believe in him. Sin makes us enemies of God. Not only did Jesus bring about the forgiveness of sin for all believers, but at the Cross Jesus also made his followers friends of God instead of his enemies.
What Was the Cross?, Danika Cooley (Christian Focus Publications, 2025), page 8
The Cross was more than just an ancient wooden torture device intended for criminals.
The Cross represents the moment that Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, took the punishment for the sin of all who believe in him.
For Christians, the Cross is the symbol of the freedom and eternal life that Jesus bought for us.
What Was the Cross? will help your children understand how all of Scripture points toward the salvation of Jesus made possible for us because of his sacrifice on the Cross.
In a fun and engaging way, children will look at how the events in the Garden of Eden, during the Exodus, and through the Prophets all pointed forward to Jesus. They will learn about Jesus' substitutionary atonement in a way they can understand. They, they will see how the entire biblical narrative was fulfilled in Jesus' work on the Cross. They will learn, too, about how the Bible points Christian toward the future, when we will live with Jesus for eternity.

The Who What Why series is the perfect way to teach your kids, ages 7-12, about the history of our faith!
The Cross of Jesus Christ
Your kids need to be able to answer the question: What Was the Cross?. The Cross is the symbol of our eternal salvation through the work of Jesus Christ.
Take a look at a few things your children will learn about the Cross:
- At the very beginning of Creation, humans sinned. God promised the seed of the woman would bruise the head of the offspring of the serpent. This started a war between the followers of Jesus and the followers of Satan. Jesus was bruised on the Cross, but he won the war.
- The sacrifice of the perfect lamb at the first Passover pointed to the sacrifice of the only perfect, sinless man, the Lamb of God--Jesus.
- God's prophets shared God's message about his coming Messiah, the Savior. Jesus bore the sin of believers on the Cross and paid the penalty for sins, just as the prophet Isaiah said he would.
- Only the one, sinless God-Man, the incarnate Christ, could pay the price for our sins. The birth of Jesus is the Incarnation, when God became man.
- Jesus accepted his mission to die on the Cross willingly. He was not surprised by the Cross. Instead, he worked for our benefit and for his own glory.
- Jesus' death on the Cross was a victory.
- His victory is complete, yet not quite whole. We are in the already-and-not-yet kingdom of God. One day, Jesus will return for believers.
The Cross is the story of God's great plan for salvation. It is the explanation for the gospel. The Cross is the means by which Jesus Christ, God the Son, saves sinners.

"As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight." - Psalm 16:3, ESV
Christian History Matters for Our Kids.
History matters. Now, more than ever, we see how important it is for our children to know and understand history and the Bible. Here's why:
- God is the sovereign ruler of all things. It's important for our kids to see his hand in the history of nations and in the lives of both peasants and kings.
- Christian history is the story of our family history. Our kids get to see how people who love Jesus follow him.
- Understanding history can help our kids learn historic and biblical theology. They learn what the Bible says and what that means for us. They also see when the study of Scripture has taken important turns that have changed the Church.
- Reading Christian biographies and history can be a wonderful way for kids to think outside their own time and culture. God's Church spans centuries and includes people from every nation.
- Christian biographies help kids consider their own faith, walk with Jesus, and the impact their witness may one day have on others--and on history.
Elementary-aged kids need middle grade resources that are fun, a little sassy, and that teach valuable lessons.

The Who What Why Series is the perfect resource to teach your kids about history, while helping them apply biblical truths to their lives today.

What Was the Cross? is my favorite book in the Who What Why? series so far. It’s SO good. As with all the books in the series, it’s written in an interesting way that really breaks down complex ideas and events so they are easier to understand. For example, Danika uses clock imagery to describe history and how different events and people impact each other. She also takes the common analogy of a courtroom setting (where God is the Judge and we are accountable for our sin) and goes even deeper with it to explain what Jesus did for us on the cross and our adoption into God’s family. I also really appreciate the different ways she describes the nature of Jesus - it’s very accessible for children. A perfect book to read through and discuss with your kids!
I love when authors can help connect the old testament to the new. This book shows that God had a rescue plan from the beginning and makes you excited to learn more about God's big story.
In What Was the Cross?, Danika Cooley takes incredibly big ideas and breaks them down into language that is a perfect fit for ages 8-12. She explains why Jesus’ death was absolutely necessary and how without Him, every single one of us is guilty before God. It is the perfect tool to engage young readers and help them understand one of the most important events in all history. It’s a great fit for families, homeschools, and churches.
A lot of people underestimate what kids can understand about theology, but not Danika Cooley. While using words and illustrations that kids can understand and relate to, she writes about deep and theologically important ideas. Not just stating facts, but using humor and playfulness in God-honoring ways to communicate the gospel. In What Was the Cross, Cooley demonstrates her gifts for writing Christian history for kids by sharing the most important event in history. While I may argue that the resurrection is the most important, or at least tied as the most important, I love the way she points to Jesus' work on the cross as an anchor and a lens to see the rest of history.
This book is all about the cross and talks about why Jesus died on it, what it means for us, and how it is the story of the greatest event in history. It is written with ages 7-12 in mind. If you have kids, I highly recommend this book! The font is easy to read, there are fantastic illustrations, and it is organized well. Bible verses and a timeline are included as well.
My kids love all of the books from the Who What Why series - as do I! Danika makes it so easy to learn about history and the Bible.
This book, along with Why Did the Resurrection Happen? is perfect to read at Easter and for a new believer as they are starting to understand what they are starting to believe. A perfect pair of books to give to your young child.
I love this series so I was excited when I learned more books were coming out! This one is about the Christian cross and its significance. From Old Testament prophecies to New Testament fulfillment... It's very interesting and informative! I love using this to teach my children history through stories. Exactly the way I prefer to teach history in our homeschool!
