Prayers in the Bible | Going to God's Word for Guidance, Deliverance, Thanksgiving, and More
How do you pray when you don’t know what to say? The Bible holds the answer.
God doesn’t expect us to pray without guidance. In fact, Scripture is full of examples of ordinary people approaching our extraordinary God in prayer.
Award-winning author Danika Cooley believes that praying God’s Word teaches us how to best communicate with our Lord:
“There are so many lessons we can learn from Scripture about how to approach God and what to expect when we do.”

Danika’s devotional 60 Scriptures You Can Pray covers eight types of prayer from the Bible, the expectations we should have when we pray, and the right heart attitude for prayer.
60 Scriptures You Can Pray features prayers of:
- Praise | We adore God for who he is.
- Thanksgiving | We thank God for all he has done.
- Confession | We admit our sin to the God who saves us.
- Supplication | We humbly ask God to provide for our needs.
- Intercession | We ask God to meet the needs of others.
- Deliverance | We cry out to God for help in times of trouble.
- Lament | We bring our sorrow to God, our comforter.
- Guidance | We ask for God’s help in determining his will for our lives.
When you read 60 Scriptures You Can Pray, you will:
- Develop a habit of praying daily over a two-month period
- Learn more about prayer in Scripture
- Understand eight different types of prayer
- Expand your understanding of how to pray biblically
- Become better acquainted with God, His Word, and why we pray

I haven't read the entire book yet, but here's what I can say about it after a few days... Danika writes very well, in a way that is easy to understand but backed by in-depth research. It's like I'm sitting across from her, sipping a cup of coffee, to discuss these things. I enjoy books with meaningful topics, and this is exactly that. I love her personal introduction and testimony of God hearing and answering the intentional prayers of her and her husband! Danika has managed to balance going into depth (making them meaningful) with each devotion while keeping them short and sweet (about 2 pages for each day). I can easily read each day's devotion in minutes. I can already tell that this book will be impactful, and I encourage you to read it for yourself!
Prayer has never come easily to me. It is a habit I have always had to work for as a Christian to develop and stay consistent, and often I fall very short. During a season of grief following our miscarriage, I found myself in a spiritual desert, going through the motions of my daily Bible reading without the fervor I once had. I received a copy of "60 Scriptures You Can Pray" as a gift during this time, and it was the balm my soul needed. Danika's writing style is conversational and it feels like you are sitting down with a friend in a coffee shop. You step away feeling uplifted and encouraged - challenged to be more like Christ.
Each day includes a short Scripture passage, a devotional reflection, and a corresponding prayer. The highlighted passages are prayers prayed by Jesus Himself and by God’s people throughout Scripture. The devotionals draw out the principles and promises embedded in each passage and offer practical guidance for applying those truths to everyday life. At the end of each chapter, Danika provides a written prayer you can pray along with, or use as a framework for praying in your own words.
For those who struggle to pray, whether from distraction, discouragement, grief, or simply not knowing where to begin, 60 Scriptures You Can Pray offers a faithful and gentle guide. It reminds us that prayer is not something we conjure from our own emotional reserves, but something God Himself invites and supplies through His Word and by the power of His Holy Spirit. By rooting prayer firmly in Scripture, this devotional helps reorient both the mind and the heart toward truth, even when emotions lag behind.
This book has been a means of grace, a reminder of God’s goodness, helping me return day after day to the God who hears, who remains faithful, and who invites His people to come boldly before Him, even when they come broken. I commend it to you. It has been a blessing to me.
Danika clearly articulates prayer in such a beautiful way. This is such a timely book that God knew I needed to read and I will save it for my daughter to read. I will definitely recommend it to all my friends to add to their bookshelves!
I came to know Christ almost 4 decades ago and have completed many bible series and studies from well-known pastors and teachers of the faith. However, outside of going through a wonderful series on the Lord's Prayer, I've never studied "prayer" until a few months ago when I found a short study that I embarked upon. What that study did for me was open my eyes to my desire to learn more about prayer. Then, within a matter of days, I learned of Danika Cooley's book, "60 Scriptures You Can Pray".
Danika’s book isn't an in-depth, time-consuming one to read...It is, however, thought provoking and one that I've added on top of my daily routine of bible study.
It is divided up into sections, (Prayers of praise, thanksgiving, confession, supplication, intercession, deliverance, lament and guidance) and written so that you may read it from cover to cover or skip around through the sections that we believe we most need at any given moment in time. If you read one section a day, it will take you 60 days to complete.
Each section begins with scripture, includes a section of scripture to read (from a few verses to a chapter), and asks us a question to get us thinking about our own lives. She then describes what takes place within the section of scripture we've just read before bringing it back to us, our life, our circumstances, our walk and relationship with Him. At the end of each section, she gives us a prayer to pray.
This isn’t a book I’ll read and then place on a bookshelf to gather dust. It is one I’m reading cover to cover and then will use in the future, section by section, pulling from it to refresh, renew, advise and to grow.
Recommendation: Add "60 Scriptures You Can Pray" to library, using it as an individual study or within your local small group!
60 Scriptures You Can Pray gives you a simple way to start the new year with powerful, biblical prayers. Danika organized 60 scripture-based prayers into 8 helpful categories, so you always know where to turn when you're not sure how to pray.
I've had times in my own life when I didn't know what to pray, and I did exactly what Danika shows you to do - pray Bible verses. They are truth, they are God's will, and this excellent guide helps you lean into Scripture as you pray. It's the perfect tool to help you get started this year.
I'm two weeks into this book and thought I would share a quick example from day nine. We opened with reading Gen 21:1-7. Danika then shares more about the passage and links it to Hebrews 11:11 talking about Sarah conceiving in her old age “because she judged Him Faithful who had promised.” Danika’s prayer later on says, “Lord, I thank You that Your Word is true and praise You for being faithful.” This then leads me into my own prayer time acknowledging all the ways He has been faithful in my life and asking that the Holy Spirit would help me to live in a way that continues to acknowledge His faithfulness.
This book is a great introduction and continued practice for those who want to deepen their prayer life using scripture to guide them!
